Reference and Data Services provides an integrated approach to meeting the evolving needs of Cal Poly students and faculty. This unit intentionally and holistically supports the Kennedy Library definition of information literacy, explicitly encompassing traditional and digital literacies. Reference and Data Services leverages the synergy of professional expertise and peer-assisted learning.
More traditional reference and research needs are provisioned through in-person help at the Research Help Desk on the second floor of Kennedy Library as well as via email and 24-hour chat. Research and creative activities relying on more sophisticated digital tools (such as GIS, data, and text-mining) are supported via expert staff and students staffing the Open Studio Hub Desk in room 111. The dynamic mutual support model of these services is predicated on the close coordination of leadership and providers across all modes.
