Russ White, Data and GIS specialist, and Brett Bodemer, CLA Librarian, will engage participants in an assignment developed for a large-section class in which students visualize current and historic racial distributions in their hometowns through various online mapping tools. The assignment is extremely popular on an affective level (some students report spending more than an hour than needed because it is so interesting!) and provides a low-barrier entry to digital tools. This assignment can be easily deployed in any class that seeks to get students thinking about race in a way that hits home. We will do a hands-on walk through. All are welcome, and no experience is necessary! Kennedy 216B, Friday May 4, noon-1:30.
