National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week (November 18–22 in 2013), GIS Day is a global event to raise awareness of geographic information system (GIS) technology and the important contributions it makes in many aspects of society.
GIS is a computer-based system designed to capture, store, and analyze geographic data. With these tools users can query, measure, and visualize geographic data providing a powerful platform for understanding. GIS is used by planners, scientists, engineers, emergency responders, and many others, including the public, to navigate our world and to make timely and informed decisions.
