The computer is frozen – the mouse and keyboard do not work, what should I do?
Ask a Computer Support Assistant (PolyConnect or Learning Commons desk) or trying a “Log Off,” which re-starts the computer. BEFORE you log off, remember that all files will be deleted once the computer re-starts.
Remember to save your work often to a flash drive and/or email it to yourself as you work.
How do I log in to a computer?
In the PolyConnect lab use your Cal Poly user name and password. Your user name is your email address without @calpoly.edu.
All other computers in the Library can be accessed using your Cal Poly user name or you can log in as a “guest.” The number on the label on the top right of the monitor is both the user name and password. It is case sensitive and contains dashes. For example: lib-217d-27
Why did I get an error message when I tried to log in to a computer?
- Error message: “Pharos: The username and password could not be authenticated against servers.”
This means you entered a user name or password incorrectly or that a Portal password had gotten “out of sync” with an active directory password. The solution is to reset the password from the Portal (my.calpoly.edu) from a computer using a guest log in — see prior question.
- Error message: “domaine is blocked” or the “account is locked.”
This usually means all computers in the Library are locked. Tell your supervisor (Jane) if nearby, if not call 6-1189 and tell them the lab computers are locked. If this happens in the evening or on the weekend, users will have to wait until the account “unlocks itself” which may take up to 30 minutes.
- Error message: “You cannot use this computer, you already have an active session on computer xx-xx-xx.”
This means that a user logged in to a computer, did not log off and someone else is using their login. You can find that computer, ask the user to log off or find another non-PolyConnect computer and log in as a guest.
The computer is on but the monitor is black, what should I do?
First, press the power button in the lower right corner. If that doesn’t work, carefully disconnect/reconnect the VGA cable and/or power cable to “reboot” the monitor. You might have to restart the computer too.
Why am I seeing an error message about an expired license?
Notify a Computer Support Assistant at the PolyConnect or Learning Commons desk and we will ask campus ITS about the status of the license.
I can’t find a document that I edited and was attached to an email. Where did it go?
Open the program (Word, Excel, etc.) and look in “Open Recent” documents. If not there, select the LibLabs-user shortcut on desktop and look in My Documents. If not there your document may have been saved to a temporary Internet file and cannot be retrieved.
To avoid this problem, “Save As” your attached documents to the desktop or USB drive before you edit and save.
