Artists' Book Collection

The Special Collections’ Department of the Kennedy Library acquires and preserves examples of letterpress, limited edition, first edition, and other fine printed books, primarily from book artists in California. The department also collects books on printing, marbling, papermaking, binding, and other aspects of book arts.

The collection began in earnest in the 1970s and has since grown to include over 700 books. The collection reflects artists’ books from many sources, including individual California artists and established presses and publishers.

Special Collections assists students, faculty and other researchers by providing access to the book arts collections and offers book arts presentations, highlighting presses and artists from the collection. The department’s goal is to promote the preservation and study of the book as a physical object as an integral part of California’s cultural heritage.
