Rita Blaik, a multidisciplinary scientist, artist, and dancer based in Los Angeles, will sit down with Ruta Saliklis, Director of Exhibitions and Development at the San Luis Obispo Art Museum, to talk about her work in the context of the burgeoning STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) movement, which incorporates the arts into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) subjects.

From ritablaik.com:

She received her B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California at Irvine, where she participated in many diverse research fields such as metallurgy and thermal effects, bio-ceramics, and tissue engineering. She also helped co-found UCI MatSci, a student chapter of the nationally recognized society Material Advantage, which began an outreach program to local high school students. Currently pursuing a PhD in the same field at UCLA, she is a proud fellow of the IGERT Clean Energy for Green Industry fellowship and works with professor Bruce Dunn on biological fuel cell systems and architectures. She is also an instructor for the UCLA Sci|Art Nanolab, a highly competitive two week summer program for high school students with the end goal of development of proposals and ideas that could serve as prototypes for either an art project or a scientific research study. As of Fall 2011 she is also the networking + outreach coordinator for the UCLA Art|Sci Center.

This conversation is offered in partnership with the San Luis Obispo Art Museum, where BODYidentity, an exhibit featuring Rita Blaik’s photography, opens Friday October 4, from 6-9pm, during Art After Dark.
