How to Use Data and Design to Tell Stories

At this Cal Poly Science Cafe, we welcome Steve Duenes, the graphics director for The New York Times. Art and design senior Ali Albiani, the winner of Open Science Cafe, is our organizer.

During this Science Cafe event and workshop, the audience will have an opportunity to hear about Steve Duenes’ career trajectory and how his liberal arts background informs his work, which combines new media, writing, science and statistics. He will discuss how The New York Times graphics department approaches visual journalism and the audience will have the opportunity to experience and interact with some of the graphics he and his team have published.

Steve Duenes, associate managing editor at The New York Times, has been with the company since 2004. The graphics department is comprised of 30 journalists and designers who research, design and develop the interactive maps, data visualizations and motion graphics for The New York Times’ digital platforms and printed newspaper. The department is in a state of constant motion, responding to breaking news or continuing stories in addition to contributing to editing efforts on long-term projects. The team played a major role in developing last year’s multimedia story, “Snow Fall,” and they continue to lead integrated, multimedia stories around the newsroom. Duenes has also been a contributor at the New Yorker and a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

This is the first Open Science Cafe, which awards a student proposal with a public programs mentor and budget. Read more about it at Kennedy Library Competitions.

Partners: Department of Art and Design, Journalism Department and AIGA Santa Barbara.
