Call for papers

Back in the fall, I wrote a post about a new student-run and student-written academic journal I was about to start, called Symposium: Student Journal of Science and Math. At that time, we had the initial design by our Branding Director Natalie Rich and the idea to create an outlet that promotes scientific discussion and research among students of the College of Science and Math (COSAM). Now we’re in full swing!

Meet the team!

Since my first outreach meeting, Symposium’s editorial board has grown to eight executive editors and 13 reviewers. One of the best parts about my job as the Editor-in-Chief is that I get to work with talented students from a range of disciplines (from engineering to journalism). Whenever we run into a challenge, the editorial board always brainstorms creative solutions to help Symposium succeed. 

In addition to Symposium’s amazing student editorial board, we have two equally amazing advisors. Digital Scholarship Services Librarian Marisa Ramirez and Dr. Elena Keeling have provided endless support and invaluable resources to help this journal become a reality.

Call coming through! Symposium is calling for papers

Symposium is accepting papers and it’s not too late for you to submit! The submission window for the inaugural Spring 2014 issue of Symposium is open until this Friday, April 11th at 11:59p.m.

Students are invited to submit work completed during their undergraduate studies at Cal Poly.

We take a variety of work. Here’s a quick blurb on the different sections and types of content you can submit to Symposium:

  • Editorial and Commentary: Commentary on a scientific topic or issue that initiates symposium and discussion.
  • Research & Review Articles: Reports that offer insight, in-depth analysis, or theoretical exploration on a subject in the field of science and math. Examples are senior project proposals and investigative research papers.
  • Learn by Doing: Stories from the Field: Pieces that exhibit Cal Poly’s “Learn by Doing” motto and showcase student reflections on experiences in the fields of science and math. Examples of reflection subjects are unique lab experiences, field work, internship projects, or work abroad.

As you can see from the range of content we accept, there is an opportunity for all past and present students from all majors to submit. The editorial board is ready to help with submissions. If you need assistance uploading your content, we can walk you through it step-by-step.
