Campus invited to open forum April 10 at Kennedy Library for architects’ closing presentation

Kennedy Library at Cal Poly

This post is written by University Librarian Anna Gold.

A team from the distinguished architectural firm Shepley Bulfinch returns to Cal Poly on April 10 for their third and final visit to explore ideas for reimagining Kennedy Library for the next 5-10 years.

Following their November kick-off visit where they met with numerous focus groups, in February, the team of architects and designers shared initial design concepts with the project’s steering committee and building program committee, as well as with staff, faculty, academic partners and students.

The reimagining project will serve the campus by creating new capacity and exciting program spaces in the current library building.  It also looks toward the expanded, technologically rich and vibrant social spaces planned for the library expansion (Academic Commons).

At the heart of Cal Poly’s work with Shepley Bulfinch is an exploration of the library’s architectural and programmatic goals in the context of the larger campus ecology and master planning. The library’s goals include offering more and better common spaces for study; agile, responsive access to a broader and deeper collection of quality information; and a learning environment that blends peer support, expert personal help, and convenient, responsive digital tools.  As the most inclusive and expansive learning commons on campus, the library is in a unique position to support students and faculty in sparking cross-disciplinary connections and experiences that empower collaboration, discovery, and entrepreneurial and creative ideas.

The Open Forum will be held on April 10 in the café area near Julian’s on the library’s second floor, from 11 am to 12:30 pm. For more information, please contact Cheryl May, Library Administrative Services, 805.756.2345 or ude.yloplacnull@yamsc.
