Reimagining Kennedy Library: Continuing the campus conversation

This post is by University Librarian Anna Gold.

For two days in November, the architectural firm Shepley Bulfinch met and spoke with faculty, students, staff, and members of the wider Cal Poly community to learn about how the Kennedy Library as a place can meet the core needs of the campus in a rapidly changing time.

Wide-ranging, future-focused

Six focus groups consisting of students, faculty, and staff from the library and across campus, as well as a group of distinguished community members, came together for lively brainstorming and discussions facilitated by the architects. Discussions ranged from the library’s role in supporting research by faculty and students; using spaces to support cross-disciplinary learning and a wide range of communication, data, and visual literacies; innovative use of technologies in and outside classrooms; building community, inspiration, and transparency. The future of print and digital collections and the need to provide improved space for Cal Poly’s most unique library collections and archives were among the other topics discussed.

Cross-campus leadership

A steering committee chaired by University Librarian Anna Gold also includes Vice Provost and CIO Michael Miller, Director of Facilities Planning & Capital Projects Joel Neel, and Dean of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, Christine Theodoropoulos. They are supported by a broad-based Building Program Committee that includes representatives of the library’s leadership team and the Student Library Advisory Council/ASI, as well as other leaders from Information Services, Student Affairs, and the offices of the President and the Provost.

A bridge to the future

With a state-funded library expansion planned for construction in the next decade, the architects are leading us in creating a building program plan that is a bridge to the future.  Their next visit to campus is expected February 4, when the architects will meet again with representative faculty, students, and staff from across campus.  Reports and recommendations will be shared broadly with the campus as they are available.
