Getting started with Rachel Scott

My name is Rachel Scott. If you Google my name, you will find out, shockingly, that I am not the only Rachel Scott in the world — side note: I also discovered that fact when I was invited to a Facebook group called “The Rachel Scotts of Facebook,” a huge and kind of creepy coalition of thousands of Rachel Scotts. You will find lots of other Rachel Scotts out there who have done many exciting things, like Rachel Scott musicians, Rachel Scott authors and Rachel Scott tumblrs.

I am now branding myself for Google

One day, however, I would like to appear on the first page of your Google search. I hope that being a communications and public programs student assistant at Kennedy Library will help me in my quest for Google search recognition.

Being a journalism major, I love to write and communicate. I love all the journalism classes I have taken so far and am looking forward to a successful career in public relations. At the library, I will gain and practice the communications skills that I will need for my career. Being my first writing and communicating job, I am learning so much about blogging, website writing, managing social media, how to best communicate ideas to a target audience and so much more.

Journalism professors take note: I’m listening

Also being a journalism major, I am constantly hearing from a lot of journalism professors how important it is to create your personal brand if you plan to go into the communications side of journalism. This means that you need to create a space for yourself in the world, usually accomplished through blogging and social media and developing your own voice. A brand helps people to recognize your writing and creates a following, something that is attractive to employers. This position is exactly what I need to help me create a personal brand.

I hope to learn a lot, create a portfolio and have fun, of course!

From SoCal To SloCal

I was born and raised in Southern California, the O.C. more specifically. Before you think of all the stereotypes associated with my hometown, let me be the first one to tell you that growing up was not like The O.C. or The Real Housewives of Orange County. I grew up with Disneyland, the beach, and many sunny afternoons. I love enjoying the outdoors, hanging out with friends, catching up with my shows on Netflix and eating colossal amounts of frozen yogurt.

Moving to San Luis Obispo for college has been the best experience of my life. I know that working at Kennedy Library will greatly enhance my college experience, and I am so excited to get started!
