Zach Vowell named digital archivist at Kennedy Library

Zach Vowell joined Kennedy Library in July, 2013, as a Digital Archivist. This position is new for Kennedy Library.

Born digital

“This position represents a major step forward in our commitment to collecting, sharing, and preserving born-digital records and artifacts, while expanding the reach and impact of our traditional collections through digitization programs,” said Anna Gold, university librarian.

Before coming to Cal Poly, Zach was the digital archivist at the Briscoe Center for American History, an archives and research center at the University of Texas at Austin. He also was the principal archivist and curator of a digital video game archive and worked with digitization projects related to photograph archives, energy and natural resources, and regional newspapers.

Sharing socially

Zach’s experience at UT included using social media software in archives. He led a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS) requirements development effort and managed a community within a DSpace community repository. In addition to working with born-digital resources, Zach has experience with digitization from print and microform as well as conversion of legacy digital materials from disks, drives and tapes. He has developed project management, metadata, and archives policy and procedures development experience in addition to working with various types of digital resources.

Zach received his MS in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006, and is a member of the Academy of Certified Archivists. He is active in the professional digital archives community, and he has several recent professional publications.
