Starting spring quarter 2010, the PolyConnect Lab on the first floor of the Kennedy Library will stay open 24 hours, providing access to computers and printers for Cal Poly’s night owls and early birds.
Doubled in Size
Since it opened in fall 2007, the Library’s 24-hour study space has more than doubled in size, adding quiet study and computer access in response to student requests (see 24-hour room survey, May 2008). Use of the Library’s 24-hour space continues to grow, with over 6000 users in February 2010, a 32% increase over February 2009.
Quiet study room
“I really need a quiet area because when the library is closed it is hard to focus with everyone talking in the study room.”
A new quiet 24-hour study room opened in fall 2009, adding over 40 seats for students needing a place to focus away from their dorms and apartments. This spring, students in the new quiet 24-hour room will enjoy an even quieter experience, courtesy of a new drop ceiling.
24-hour computer access
“Keep the computer lab open, tons of people would use it.”
With its eye-catching red and yellow seating, 8 Macs, and 39 PCs at stations that support individual and small group work, the PolyConnect Lab (Room 114b) will be open 24-hours beginning spring quarter, 2010. This space will also become a lot cooler (both literally and figuratively) with the installation of a much requested air conditioning system. The hours of the Poly Connect Desk, offering technical help and lending laptops, cameras, and other media devices, will remain the same as main Library hours.
Enhanced late night security
“I am a proud 24 hour study room patron and love having somewhere to go study when I get too tired to study anywhere near my bed.”
To provide a more secure late night environment, a Cal Poly ID card will be required to enter the 24-hour space when the main Library is closed. A card swipe at the entrance to the 24-hour space has been installed and swipe card access will be activated during late night hours, beginning spring quarter.
