88-year-old High School Dropout Wins Nobel Prize for Literature

Doris Lessing returned home from visiting her son in the hospital to find her front steps crowded with reporters and photogaphers. When told she had won the Nobel Prize for Literature, she was surprised. Later, she changed her mind: “this has been going on for something like 40 years,” referring to the number of times she has been mentioned as a likely honoree. “Either they were going to give it to me sometime before I popped off or not at all.” Her work ranges from feminist novel to science fiction to opera libretto.
The Nobel Prize wasn’t the only big news for Ms. Lessing last week. As a result of all the publicity, more than 100 people signed up to be her friend on MySpace.
