GIS Day at Cal Poly, November 14, 2007

GIS Day 2007 was another hugely successful event with over 200 people in attendance. Sixteen exhibitors from government and private industrly demonstrated how they use GIS in their work, using both printed maps, and online resources. Students, professors, staff and community members all shared ideas and learned new information about how GIS can benefit them in their studies and work.

"I was so busy that I didn't take time to count, but I suspect that well over 200 people attended this time around. We had at least two professors bring over whole classes to listen to presentations and view the exhibits. I noticed that the seats were well-filled during the presentations, and that there were lively discussions going on around the refreshment table and at the exhibitors' tables about new ways to use GIS. We were able to show several students how GIS would benefit their Senior Projects - and start them on the road to being able to use the software. It was great!" said Carol Schuldt of Cal Poly's Kennedy Library and the GIS Day event coordinator.

Five speakers talked about such diverse projects as a 3-D map of Downtown SLO, open source GIS programming, using GIS to map and develop local mountain bike trails, using GIS to manage vineyards, and a huge project for the Audubon Society that maps important bird areas in California and the West.
