I just got an email from Richard Price, who recently launched www.academia.edu, a networking site for academe. The site allows faculty to set up their own profiles, upload publications and link up with others with similar research interests. The site features over 5,000 faculty profiles include those of Stephen Hawking and Noam Chomsky.
Here at Cal Poly, we’ve also identify the faculty need for profiles. Our library services include the creation of profile pages on behalf of the faculty member. The faculty contact us at the library, and we do all the heavy lifting, including populating the profile pages with the research the faculty have submitted to the DigitalCommons@CalPoly repository. Our profiles are in a centralized place that can be used to showcase the faculty work, facilitate interdisciplinary research across campus and help others identify subject specialists.
