Every year Pantone selects a color of the year to reflect design and color trends (but maybe it’s simply a marketing gimmick).

So are they right? Maybe only hindsight will tell, though I have been seeing yellow pop up on more and more web sites (including Tyson’s personal site). Pantone says that Mimosa is an optimistic color in the face of the current world climate.

Where else can you see color trends?

  • Sherman Williams, the paint company, thinks people’s eyes need a respite and predicts a turn from bold to dusky with gray being the frontrunner color (I agree!)
  • ColourLovers, a great web site for design tools and community, shows trending colors on a weekly and monthly scale; I use this web site a lot
  • Design Meltdown lets you see color trends via web sites; pick a color to view a slew of sites designed around that color
