About Banned Books
- Every year across the country parents, administrators, politicians, religious groups and library patrons challenge books that they feel are inappropriate for the community.
- Challenging a book in an attempt to remove it from a school or public library is a threat to your First Amendment rights. It takes away your right to choose material that is appropriate for yourself or your family.
- It is important to speak out against these challenges so that everyone can celebrate the Freedom to Read. Stand up against censorship by reading a book from the American Library Association's (ALA) banned book list.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
