Employment: Digital Repository Librarian
Detailed Responsibilities Include:
Liaison/Outreach Activities - 30%
- Advocate on behalf of the library's institutional repository and its collections and services to the university community, including faculty site visits, demonstrations, and training
- Actively seek out and secure contributors and their content for inclusion in the institutional repository
- Serve as spokesperson to publicize the institutional repository's benefits and uses
- Work collaboratively with College Librarians to identify contributors and content within their respective colleges and to promote the institutional repository's services
- Provide expertise, assistance, and training to the institutional repository's users
- Present and interpret Kennedy Library services and policies to users from both within and outside the University
- Research, write and help coordinate production of repository promotional materials for users and contributors
- Stimulate, develop, implement, and communicate with campus colleagues on institutional repository and other digital initiative from the library
- Serve as ad hoc member of the library's institutional repository project management, advisory, and user groups
- Coordinate and communicate with specific user groups on support for defined institutional repository communities
- Provide expertise, assistance, and training to the library's public services staff in their support of the library's institutional repository end-users
- Develop and deliver web-based guides and tutorials, orientations, lectures, on using and contributing to the institutional repository
Content Management - 30%
- Train and oversee support staff and students creating, tagging, and retrieving digital files and objects, including application of appropriate metadata schemas
- Work cooperatively with vendor(s) and Cal Poly staff and faculty regarding functionality
- Research, recommend, and implement procedures for the creation, storage and preservation/future conversion of supported and proposed file formats
- Research, recommend, and implement relevant metadata schemas for supported and proposed file formats
- Coordinate and manage the definition and setup of the institutional repository's communities and collections
- Work collaboratively with IT staff and vendor(s) on system management issues
- Coordinate importing of historical and/or retrospective collections into the library's institutional repository, including metadata application, conversion referral, and developing metadata crosswalks as necessary
- Serve as a resource person on key issues relating to the library's digital environment
- Consult with faculty on learning object needs using repository digital content and objects
- Maintain a working knowledge of metadata schemes appropriate for digital information
Project Management - 30%
- Participate as an active team member and developer in planning, implementation, maintenance and technical support responsibilities for the repository
- Draft working documents for service definition, policies, marketing, user and contributor support and training, and internal workflows
- Propose new and revised phases of development for the institutional repository, including assessing needs, defining the project, determining a set of manageable tasks, obtaining appropriate support and authorization, and implementing new services
- Ensure that the phases of library's institutional repository project stay on track and take appropriate action to manage expectations
- Consult with appropriate colleagues on functionality, metadata, digital preservation, and related issues
- Work collaboratively with faculty colleagues on grant and other proposals related to digital initiatives
- Manage usability studies and other feedback mechanisms
- Gather and report use statistics
Other Activities - 10%
- Represent the Kennedy Library on university, CSU, and professional committees
- Initiate and develop contacts outside the University
- Represent the Kennedy Library at conferences and participate in activities of relevant regional and national associations
- Contribute to the knowledge base of the profession, especially in the areas of expertise
- Other responsibilities, as assigned
